As an overpacker and an overthinker, I somehow manage to plan an outfit for every possible situation before I even leave for a trip. Fancy dinner? Packed. Cold weather? Packed. Beach day? Packed. Random outfit change halfway through the day? Also packed.
Who ends up suffering? My suitcase zipper.
For the longest time, I thought every new destination deserved a completely new wardrobe. I convinced myself I needed new dresses, new shoes, and new tops because somehow my old clothes didn’t match the trip. Looking back, my bank account definitely disagrees with that mindset.
But when I scroll through my favorite travel photos, I realized something funny.
I wore the same clothes.
The same white tank came with me to Morocco, Cabo, California, Amsterdam, and Chicago. The same linen pants somehow ended up in every suitcase. My white sneakers walked through airports, train stations, beaches, hiking trails, and city streets all over the world.
It made me realize that travel isn’t about buying more clothes. It’s about getting more out of the clothes you already love. Now, instead of buying a whole new vacation wardrobe, I’d rather invest in a few versatile pieces that I know I’ll reach for every single trip. They save space, save money, and somehow always end up creating my favorite outfits.
These are the five pieces that built almost every travel outfit I’ve worn.
1. The White Tank
This white tank from Amazon is probably the hardest-working item in my closet. It’s supportive, breathable, flattering, and somehow goes with everything. I wore it with linen pants in Morocco, a satin skirt in Cabo, Bermuda shorts in California, and jeans with a flannel in Amsterdam and Chicago. One tank. Five destinations. Completely different outfits.

2. Linen Pants
If I had to recommend one pair of pants for traveling, it would be linen pants. They’re comfortable enough for airport days, breathable enough for warm weather, and dressy enough for dinners or walking around a new city. They became my go-to because they matched almost everything I packed while taking up very little space.

3. Bermuda Shorts
I honestly never thought Bermuda shorts would work for me. As someone with a curvier figure, I assumed they’d make my legs look shorter. Instead, pairing them with fitted tops completely changed my mind. Now they’re one of my favorite travel pieces. They’re perfect for beach days, coffee runs, city exploring, or throwing over a swimsuit after a day by the water.

4. White Sneakers
Every trip needs one pair of shoes that can do everything. These white Dr. Scholl’s sneakers earned their place in every suitcase. They matched every outfit, were comfortable enough for long walking days, supportive enough for hikes, and still looked good with dresses, jeans, and linen pants.

5. Silver Jewelry
Silver or gold doesn’t really matter. What matters is how much jewelry can elevate even the simplest outfit. A pair of hoops, a necklace, and a few rings take up almost no room in your bag but instantly make a basic outfit feel complete.

Final Thoughts on Outfit Staples
One of the biggest things traveling has taught me is to stop asking, “What new outfits should I buy?” and start asking, “What pieces do I already love wearing?”
For me, it’s the white tank that came with me to see the tulips in the Netherlands and the sea lions in San Diego. The linen pants that sat with me through airport mornings, train rides, and nights out in Barcelona. The Bermuda shorts that explored Chicago one week and California beaches the next. The white sneakers that walked through Switzerland, Arizona, New York, and countless airport terminals.
Somehow, wearing the same clothes never made my trips feel repetitive.
If anything, it reminded me that the memories are what make an outfit special, not the other way around.
